Lovecraft Eldra x Brandywine Gaston

Family tree

10/11/2015: 10 babies, day 22 of the gestation period (13 born, 10 surviving; the litter suffered a difficult birth and many of the babies sustained significant external and internal bruising).

This combination goes back to my roots a bit, as Gaston's grandfather was born in the very first litter here; Gaston himself came to me from Annette at Brandywine last year. He is my bad boy - pig-headed and carefree, and extremely impatient at feeding time (chewing the base or bars *very* loudly) - he generally thinks that everyone should just do what he commands! He's a fun rat with a lot of independence and stubbornness, which should be very nicely balanced with Eldra's gentle sweetness and light. She is a real little gem, very easy-going and licky; one of those rats that works incredibly well in any group and really just takes everything in her stride. With the parents being much more loosely related than most of my matings, it will be very interesting to see the result - I'm hoping for nice steady individuals with a good sense of hierarchy. Babies will be mostly black with a smaller proportion of mink, and if the statistics are on our side 50% of the litter should have Essex markings.

Very sadly Gaston suddenly passed away 10 days after the mating. He'd always been a big healthy strapping alpha and it happened completely out of the blue; presumably heart-related which at least should mean little hereditary risk to his offspring, but these babies will be homed to people who are well aware of the background.

This litter will be homed jointly with the Arlows and with the very closely related Shockys from Isamu Rats. I plan to keep one doe and place some of the bucks in strategic homes so we can see how the litter gets on, with the remainder being homed to my waiting list. If you are interested in going on the list for future litters, please see the Homing page for more information.
